Mission
The primary mission of Comfort House is to care for the children of Montopolis,
where families confront poverty, unemployment, drugs, prostitution and
violence every day. Comfort House provides a safe haven for many neighborhood
children after school and on weekends. Comfort House provides meals, snacks,
clean clothes, baths, new underwear and shoes, educational materials, outings
and activities. In addition, many others are assisted on a case-by case
basis. This aid includes delivering nutritious food to elderly residents,
and helping teenagers and adults through temporary difficulties. |
Program
For children, Comfort House provides food, clothing, baths, books, toys, and a
safe place. Florence's affection and care for her kids is obvious to anyone who
spends 5 minutes at Comfort House. She organizes outings, parties, and
educationally enriching activities. Children also learn to give back by
delivering food to elderly neighbors, caring for stray animals, or doing
community service such as cleaning a local cemetery. Young mothers stop by for
diapers and baby clothes. Florence often helps teens and young adults get a
start on education, a job, or a place to live. Florence also maximizes the
impact of Comfort House's efforts by effectively networking with local
government, schools and other non-profits. |
Results
People turn to Florence when they have problems: she located housing for young
adults, including a handicapped young man; local drug addicts come by at late
hours when coming down off a bad high; Florence provides clothing, food,
blankets and other necessities to families and particularly the elderly; and she
assists those who may be ignorant of or have possibly exhausted other resources.
Often times, Florence provides help by tapping into the network of volunteers,
board members, individuals and organizations that support Comfort House. Last
year, the Travis County Sheriff's Posse moved their annual Thanksgiving dinner
giveaway to Florence's as she has better ties to the neighbors, and is more
dependable than the local community center. Volunteers from 3 churches, Home
Depot, and numerous individuals assisted with the building of the fort, roof and
fence. |
